Alexandre Herer + Devin Gray + Inga Vamze is a jazz group that explores the intertwined journeys of each artist across Europe. Inga Vamze is a Latvian saxophonist studying in Copenhagen; Devin Gray is a New Yorker living in Berlin who has followed a path opposite to that of Alexandre Herer’s great-grandparents, who arrived in the United States via Ellis Island; Alexandre Herer is of Romanian descent through his grandparents, who fled to France to escape the Holocaust.
Each of them has found their place between here and elsewhere, both in their music and in their personal histories. What role does heritage play in this globalized world? How have their journeys shaped their artistic paths? With ethereal and versatile music, the trio carves out its own territory, leaves its mark, and offers a shared culture—inherited from shared emotions, memories, stories, and legends—that resonates and reinvents itself across the continent.
Alexandre Herer met Devin Gray, a drummer from New York, during a tour of the United States in 2009. During a trip in 2018, he contacted Devin for an informal session, which took place in a rehearsal studio in Brooklyn. Alexandre decided to record the session anyway, using minimal equipment. He presented Devin with a few scores and then let the session unfold.Back in Paris, Alexandre edited, selected, and added more keyboards and sound effects, resulting in six tracks, six songs, six moments. This is the album that launched the 100% digital label 11 Minutes.
In 2025, he met Inga Vamze and invited her to perform on the Nunataq tour in the Baltic States. A rehearsal and a concert in Riga thrilled the audience, leading to a sold-out show, and the collaboration was born. He invited Inga to join the trio for a concert at the Jass in Paris, then in 2026 renewed the invitation, this time for her to join the Alexandre Herer Onze Heures Onze Orchestra.
But the desire to create music that is more personal, more improvised, and more organic led him to invite Inga Vamze and Devin Gray to bring together their experiences, life paths, and musical languages for a unique collaboration.
